The Australian Review

The West Australian Review

These headlines and reviews which they accompanied, were in response to what was undoubtedly the most spectacular and certainly memorable concert event yet held at Sandalford Wines. We just don’t mean just in the 2009-10 season, but probably in the entire nine years and covering 50 or so major world class events held to date at Sandallford!!! WOW!!!!!!!

For those who were here on Saturday, we are extending a series of incredible wine offers exclusively to concert attendees that will remain in place until late next week. Pllease scroll through to the bottom of this newsflash for the details!!

Spandau Ballet

Regardless of what the media critics had to say about the show, much more important to us however is to learn just what YOU and YOUR friends, family and colleagues (many of whom attended their first concert here on Saturday whilst of course plenty of others are already regular Sandalford concert patrons) thought about the total concert experience (both the good and any not so aspects).

We therefore URGE you to click through to our bloggers comments page at the following link www.sandalford.com/Past-Events/spandau-ballet-the-reformation-tour-past-event.html in order to share with us (and the world) your thoughts about the show, the musicians, the event organisation, the parking and traffic management arrangements, the performance of our security team, whether you liked our F&B offerings including the wine, your opinion on how the bar’s operated (eg were there long queues, were the bar staff friendly?), the surprise fireworks at the end, just how this show and overall experience compared with previous events you have might have attended at Sandalford previously, along with any and all other comments and feedback that you want to share with us (or think we should know about) so that we can work on making things even better next time (if you came with friends/family and or purchased tickets for them please send this email to them because we also want to receive their feedback too).

Also, don’t forget to share with us also any acts you would like to see perform at the vineyard in future so we can investigate for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spandau Ballet

As many of you are aware, 2010 is a really important year for Sandalford Wines as we celebrate celebrate our 170th anniversary. Sandalford Wines was in fact established in 1840 as part of a land grant by Queen Victoria to the original Surveyor General of Western Australia, John Septimus Roe. Today the winery is privately owned by the Prendiville family and the company’s total land holdings (including 1,000 acres in the world famous Margaret River region 275km south of Perth) makes it one of the largest in this state. Whilst our core business remains the production of super premium wine which we export to more than 35 countries, we are also Western Australia’s leading wine tourism operator.

Part of our wine tourism business includes a commitment to host ten concert events each season at our Swan Valley Estate (and a further six at our Margaret River Estate commencing in the 2010-11 season) for as many as 12,000 people per show. In past years entertainers including Leonard Cohen, Lionel Richie, John Mellencamp, Alicia Keys, Carole King, Dionne Warwick, Harry Connick Jnr and John Fogerty among many others have performed at the winery.

During the course of Sandalford’s 2009-10 concert season, audiences exceeding 100,000 people have already seen some unbelievable performances by the likes of Tom Jones, David Campbell, Rob Thomas, Vanessa Amorosi, Ronan Keating, Tina Arena, The B52s, The Proclaimers, Kasey Chambers, The Whitlams, James Reyne, Dragon, Ross Wilson, Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Joan Osborne and the Motown Legends (The Temptations, The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, Mary Wilson and others).

Saturday night’s show was however bigger, better and more exciting than all the abovementioned concerts, and some of those who attended have already had this to say about the event at the PERTHNOW website:

“We danced, sang and cheered our way thru 2 hours of pure magic last night at Sandalford, please come back again Spandau Ballet - AWESOME! Tears for Fears were terrific, with a tremendous "Woman in Chains" setting the tone of the evening! Brilliant!”
  • Tricia H of Nedlands - Posted at 1:13 PM April 18, 2010
“Last night's Spandau Ballet/Tears for Fears concert was brilliant. We were all so impressed by the stage show and the sound was awesome. We loved Spandau in our younger days, but even the guys we were with, were blown away by their musicianship, we were so impressed. The fireworks at the end was a great surprise. Perfect weather (thank goodness it didn't rain).”

“Tears for Fears were awesome!!!! I had the best time singing along with them - only know a few spandau songs but they kept me entertained. Awesome crowd, Awesome performances, awesome surprising fireworks!
  • Sabrina of Perth - Posted at 3:41 PM April 18, 2010
“Awesome venue, awesome music, awesome night! It's the first time I've ever been to a concert at Sandleford and glad it was Tears for Fears and Spandau Ballet. They sounded just like if you were listening to them on the radio, which I did back in the 80's! Great show boys, still love you all xxWell done to the team at Sandalford!!!!!”
  • Nicky of Coogee - Posted at 5:37 PM April 18, 2010
“It truly was an amazing night. Fantastic venue, great wine, and brilliant concert. Even the support to the support act was great, hadn't heard of Jack Jones in years but even Jack brought back memories. Tears For Fears were amazing and the boys from Spandau genuinely seemed thrilled to be in Perth . They just haven't lost it. Thanks for a night that will be long remembered.

“What a fantastic concert! I last saw Spandau Ballet when they were in Perth in 1985 and loved them then but I think last night was even better than their concert in the old Entertainment Centre. The quality of the production was top class, the vocals were just as strong if not stronger than they were back in the day. It was the first concert I have been tempted to go to in many years and it was worth the wait. Tears for Fears were awesome - I didn't see them in the eighties and they were brilliant too. Ditto to Tony of Burns - lets get Duran Duran back to Perth - their last visit was in 1983 - surely it is time! Sandalford, please put in the phone call for us 80's tragics!”
  • Colin Taylor of Ellenbrook - Posted at 8:04 PM April 18, 2010
“We had a fantastic night. Tears for Fears could've played for another half hour tho. But take nothing away from Spandau Ballet. They were nothing short of brilliant. 25 years has not changed anything apart from the bands looks. Sandleford Winery is a great venue and well run”

“Fantastic!! Beat George Michael's gig hands down. I was wooing, dancing and singing all night.. I think I only sat down for 1 song. Great night for Gen exes like myself to take a trip down memory lane. Would love to see Madness, Eurythmics and Duran Duran on the comeback tour. Thanks for an amazing night Tony & boys.”
  • Linda of Perth - Posted at 10:17 PM April 18, 2010
“What a great night the weather, the atmosphere, the crowd, the venue.... both Tears for Fears and “Spandau Ballet sounded great and what a buzz to realise that we all still remember the words to all their songs. Great show still love that voice Tony!”
  • kathy mcgoldrick of currambine - Posted at 10:29 PM April 18, 2010
“fabulous, a great night, spandau were superb, but tears for fears were even better, the best money spent for a concert ever, the crowd really got into it. wonderful. Well done sandalford.”
  • Linda - Posted at 9:12 AM April 19, 2010
    “An almost surreal experience............”
  • Harry Coo - Posted at 11:55 AM April 19, 2010
“Tony Burns (comment 6) you've obviously never heard of the V Festival. Duran Duran were last in Perth in 2008 as part of it (and put on a brilliant show) and Human League were only here a year ago - along with Madness who put on an absolute blinder. If only it had come to Perth on its first year we would also have got the Pet Shop Boys. Although sadly it looks like there won't be any more V-Fests as the promoter has recently pulled out. As for Spandau & Tears For Fears, they were fantastic on Saturday night. There was such a good vibe in the audience as well. For a start I can't remember the last time I saw a crowd stand all the way through a support band's set, never mind the main act. Especially in "I paid for this seat I'm sitting in it" Perth . Am also still getting over TFF's backing singer (a white man) sounding exactly like Oleta Adams (a black woman) on "Woman In Chains". Spine-tingling. The mrs said after the show that all she needs now is for A-Ha to play here and she would never need to go to another concert again. Bummer that they're breaking up and have apparently decided to skip Oz on their farewell world tour. Am totally with Comment 29 though, bring on Depeche Mode!”
  • Terry of Perth - Posted at 1:28 PM April 19, 2010
“Mosh pit????? Are you kidding me? We are all in our 40s and more and besides, TFF and SB would never have even have had a mosh pit back 'in the day'. As for parking. Seriously? Park in Midland and catch one of the many free shuttle buses. I was home on my couch in under an hour. Superb night, great organisation and A1 bands in TFF and SB. LOVED IT!!!”
  • Mark & Adeline of north beach - Posted at 2:11 PM April 19, 2010
“Have to agree with Terry. We parked at midland train station, caught the shuttle bus and within 20min of the concert finishing we were back in our cosy B&B in guildford Fantastic concert. The guys looked genuinely excited to be there and very humble at the reception we gave them. Tony's voice was suberb. Great set list but it did flag a little in the middle. Having said that, an amazing concert. Pity anyone who was thinking of going and missed it. The wife can die happy having seen Durans in sydney 2003 at the enmore theatre and now Spandau 's”
  • Casual Observer of Perth WA - Posted at 2:48 PM April 19, 2010
“J King interesting comments. I hate this mentality that people have to sit when they want to dance. How do you think the bands feel if people don't move to what they are playing? It's not frigging opera!!! And as for drunken riff raff, it's a WINERY. I'd have thought the whole point of getting people there was to get them to drink.”
  • C.Browne of Aveley, Swan Valley - Posted at 2:55 PM April 19, 2010
“Nothing short of FANTASTIC. Tears For Fears were not as loud as they can be when heading their own show and lacked the big band support that they have had in the past- BUT .......excellent all the same and dissapointed they didnt come back for an encore. Spandau were also brilliant with all their songs and to produce a high powered performance at their age was an appreciation of an excellent crowd who got to their feet and bopped most of the night. I was up close in the VIP area and was glad to have paid the xtra (on the CC) for an unforgetable experience.Would pay again for the same experience-memories. The promoters od the concert did themselves proud and I will ceratainly be coming back for more- SANDLEFORD venue is excellent and the stage was the biggest yet and is a gerat alterantive to the poor venues PERTH has to offer touring bands.”
