Dear concert patron at tonight's performance by k.d. lang,

k.d. Lang Parts Fans with Siss, Boom, Bang

If there had been a roof over Sandalford Estate, Swan Valley this evening to block out some of the inclimate weather, k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang would have blown it off to the delight of her many eager fans in the crowd.

The crowd was clearly filled with some of lang's most adoring fans, who were able to identify each song from her set list with just the opening chord. From the sensual "Constant Craving" to her heartbreaking cover of "Hallelujah," attendees hung on her every line and note. They danced, sang and cheered their way through the whole ninety or so minutes, never losing their energy or enthusiasm.

Her legendary voice delivered everything from a sultry growl to a soaring soprano heartache. Throughout the set and  encore, lang’s remarkable voice delivered each note with an impeccable sense of timing and emotional nuance.

She never flinched from delivering a song with powerful bravado nor did she shy away from the almost unbearable tenderness and vulnerability of “The Perfect Word.”

The concert was almost evenly divided between songs from lang’s latest CD, “Sing It Loud,” and some of her older tunes, with a smattering of offerings from other artists: “Reminiscing” by the Little River Band (1978) and “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” from her duet album with Tony Bennett along with of course the Leonard Cohen timeless classic.

Backed by her first band since The Reclines played on her first two albums, lang showed a sense of playful. Returning to the humor and high-spirited campiness that characterized lang’s early work some 25 years ago, there was no holding back on the enthusiasm and energy of the evening.

Siss Boom Bang is an extremely accomplished group of five musicians with impressive credentials in the rock, pop and country genres. There was an obvious intimacy in the interplay among the players and lang.

This configuration worked well for all concerned, particularly the collaboration between lang and guitarist Joe Pisapia on several of the songs from “Sing It Loud.” Not since the early days with Ben Mink has lang had a consistent composing and arranging partner, and the chemistry shows to advantage in their work.  In addition to showing off her impressive vocal range and deft guitar-playing, she danced around the stage and interacted with the Siss Boom Bang band, as well as the audience. Her attitude was playful and light, and she brought smiles to every person at Sandalford Estate, Swan Valley.

Whilst there were 8,000 or so fans in the audience, it nevertheless felt like a very intimate environment. There was a sense of camaraderie between lang and the audience.

No doubt for you and everybody else who attended, tonight's performance will be remembered as another one of the great shows to take place at Sandalford Estate, Swan Valley in the 10 years since the first concert was here.

And of course in that time there has been many great acts perform here including Santana, John Butler, Michael Buble, Naturally 7, Sting, Simply Red, Robin Gibb, Bonnie Tyler, Crowded House, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, Lionel Richie, Leonard Cohen, Alicia Keys, The Motown Legends, John Mellencamp, Sheryl Crowe, Rob Thomas, John Fogerty, Ronan Keating, Tom Jones, Carole King, The Pretenders, Paul Kelly, Marcia Hines, Tina Arena, Kasey Chambers, The Whitlams, Hoodoo Gurus, The Proclaimers, Mental as Anything, David Campbell, Ian Moss, Kate Ceberano, World Party, Vanessa Amorosi, Missy Higgins, Jimmy Barnes, The B52's and many, many more.
